Vancouver, BC (June 26, 2014) – Hemlock Printers is one of the largest commercial sheet-fed printers in the Pacific Northwest, and continues to innovate its products and services for a wide variety of printing needs. To continue to meet the demanding fine printing market, Hemlock has added UV Printing to its roster, and partnered with Subplot Design Inc. to create a powerful marketing tool specifically for the new UV Press.
“We have invested in a cutting edge Heidelberg XLUV 6-colour press to help our clients achieve the high-end results they demand”, says Hemlock Vice President Sales & Marketing, Doug Climie. “This is not a retro-fitted piece of traditional machinery, but a brand-new, press that is capable of printing both UV and traditional lithography inks with incredible quality and amazing speeds.”
UV Printing is especially noted for faster drying times, using UV light cured inks rather than evaporation or oxidation, to achieve brighter colours and higher contrast finishes, as well as the ability to print on a wide range of paper types, thicknesses and substrates. This makes it the perfect press for colour-critical and vivid imagery, tight turn-arounds, applications that require more durability, and a whole range of special printing effects from varnishes to intricate textures.
“This new UV press is really fantastic technology”, says Roy White, Subplot Principal & project lead. “What we wanted to do was to help redefine UV for Hemlock’s audience, and showcase the wide range of benefits of this UV printing technology”.
“Redefining UV”, is a custom, glue-free case with individual cards, and begins with the question, “What does UV mean to you?”. Each card showcases a different benefit and acronym of “UV”, as well as one of more of the amazing effects of UV printing, from a chrome-mirror material, to intricate texture and varnishes, to thick cards and recycled stocks.
“Redefining UV” Kits & Insert cards:
(Woman) Brilliant colour that lasts longer
(Dog) Faster running, instant drying for fast turnarounds
(Balloon) Printing on thicker substrates
(Sunglasses) Ability to print of plastics, vinyl, foil and other specialty substrates
(Sandals) Higher scuff and scratch resistance for increased durability
(Couple) Carbon neutral press requiring less energy consumption
“Communicating a wide range of new techniques, printed on a wide range of substrates, was new territory, “adds Jeff Taylor, Hemlock Sr. VP Manufacturing and Operations. “Our goal was to create a piece for our customers that would stimulate an equally wide range of creative ideas. With input and direction from Subplot: success from both perspectives”.
Doug Climie adds to the accolades, “”Clients love seeing the fact that we do this type of R&D work – they feel confident working with a printer who will invest resources into pushing creative boundaries and demonstrating our unique capabilities with a piece like this”.
“Redefining UV” kits are being used as a talking presentation with the sales staff, and are left with key existing and prospective customers. Coupled with samples of live jobs, the kits have helped achieve uptake on Hemlock’s new capabilities to the point where the press is at capacity much earlier than expected, and has been running UV almost exclusively since launch.
