Vancouver, BC (March 22, 2005) – Having redefined the way graphic design firms do business, Subplot Design Inc. celebrates its first year anniversary with strong business and creative success. Subplot Design Inc. launched in March 2004 to allow clients direct access to experienced, senior designers.

“We wanted to fundamentally change the way clients can work with top senior creative talent in Canada,” says partner Matthew Clark. “Canadian clients have been frustrated with the complex agency model, and the lack of senior talent in boutique firms. They have been asking for a change, and we gave it to them”.

Until November 2003, Subplot’s founding partners, Matthew Clark and Roy White, were the Associate Creative Director duo at DDB Canada’s Karacters Design, working as principal designers on the agency’s most well-known and award-winning projects including Vancouver’s Urban Fare, Clearly Canadian, Reebok Fitness Water, Sun-Rype and Finning International. Subplot Design was founded by Clark and White who work directly with their clients; stripping back the bureaucratic layers and providing clients with the most senior design talent per project, helping to diminish redundancies and optimize project efficiencies.

“Canada’s small boutique design firms have an undeniable energy, but they lack experienced senior designers who have helped create and build successful international brands and category-defining campaigns”, continues Clark. “They just quite simply don’t have the experience or strategic background.”

“On the other hand, the large agencies have gobbled up most of the senior talent in the country, and have hidden them behind layers of account managers and producers, often diluting the creative product and frustrating the clients who really want to deal directly with the designers”, adds Roy White. “While the agency hierarchy may work well for very large corporations who have their own bureaucracies to deal with, this complex formula just doesn’t work for medium to large companies who are primarily run by entrepreneurial-spirited and visionary leaders. They demand action”.

Subplot Design Inc. launched with a bang on March 25, 2004, and has been embraced by companies who are looking to combine strong marketing and brand strategy with breakthough creative design. Notable projects in the first year include the complete brand design for The Publik, a new bar concept for Earl’s Restaurants; brand identity and packaging for Seattle’s StrideLite and CycLite strobe-light running and cycling gear; a new online community and identity for; renowned Canadian designer, Martha Sturdy’s furniture catalogue; and on-screen graphics for Network Productions’ successful “Making the Cut” hockey reality television show.

In addition to their first year’s business success and strong client support, Subplot Design’s first year of work has been recognized with 11 local, national and international graphic design awards for marketing and design excellence, a feature spot in the exhibition “Movers and Shapers: Contemporary Vancouver Designers”, and 6 editorials, including an 8-page feature in the US-published HOW Magazine’s Business Annual. The article is a strong testament to Subplot’s influence outside of Vancouver, and how much the new structure and quality of the design product has impressed the design industry.

“We have been thrilled with how our clients and the design industry have embraced our new approach”, says Clark. “We will continue to look for and work with brave clients who understand the value that design brings to business success, and are looking to make a real difference in their respective markets.”

“Subplot brings a wealth of design and branding talent to the table, in a responsive way that the large agencies just can’t deliver on”, says client Ian Bouchard of Seattle’s Bright Night USA. “What I look for in a graphic design firm is someone who can bring my brand to life with intelligent strategy and outstanding creative design. Not only is Subplot smart and highly creative, they have an enjoyable and streamlined process. It’s simply a level of working that small agencies don’t have experience with, and large agencies can’t respond to”.

Network Productions president Derrik Murray agrees, “It’s hard to find this kind of design talent in Vancouver. When you do, and when they have made it so easy to work with them, you hang onto them”.
