June 6, 2017 (Ottawa, Ontario) – Canada Post is marking Canada 150 with 10 stamps celebrating 10 unforgettable moments and achievements over the last 50 years. And they are doing so with the help of longtime collaborator, Subplot Design Inc. The entire stamp collection is available online today.
With so many stories to tell, Canada Post decided to focus on our modern history by celebrating 10 of the most significant events since Canada’s Centennial year. The incredible accomplishments of our first century paved the way for Canada to come of age and become a shining example to the rest of the world.
Starting on April 27, Canada Post unveiled all 10 incredible stamps at separate events over a five-week period. Each one recognized a significant event or milestone in the last 50 years that helped shape the Canada we know today.
Canada Post called on an impressive list of Canadians to help celebrate these moments – including architect Moshe Sadfie; astronaut Jeremy Hansen; Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland; country singer Dean Brody; Terry Fox’s sister, Judith Fox, Nunavut Premier Peter Taptuna; players from Team Canada 1972, including Pat Stapleton, Bobby Clarke, Yvan Cournoyer, Pete Mahovlich, Frank Mahovlich, Eddie Johnston, Brad Park, Wayne Cashman and Jean Ratelle; Paralympic athletes Arnold Boldt and Lauren Woolstencroft; and Olympic athletes Greg Joy and Joannie Rochette.
“The challenge with creating such a significant set of 10 stamps that celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary was to ensure that the stamps look part of a collectable set and yet are each unique enough to represent 10 very distinct topics”, says Roy White, Subplot Design Inc. Creative Director. “To do this, we felt it was important that this stamp should break away from the traditional shapes and formats of the majority of Canada Post’s stamps”.
Roy adds, “As such, the maple leaf shape was highly unique and a first for Canada Post, is a true Canadian icon, and fills Canadians with a sense of pride and belonging”.
Complementing each unique stamp will be a collectible Official First Day Cover (OFDC). It was during the design of each of these collectables that we had the opportunity to create very individual pieces that spoke more fully to the personality and uniqueness of the particular moment of Canadian history.
“With every Canadian ‘moment’ provided by Canada Post, our aim was to portray them through both the stamp and OFDC in a fresh and unique way”, says Liz Wurzinger, lead Canada 150 stamp designer. “The full set comes together as a very compelling and special collectible set that we are very proud to be a part of”.
In addition, the complete Canada 150 collectible set includes the full set of 10 stamps and OFDCs wrapped in a commemorative bellyband, a 10-set souvenir sheet, and a 10-set booklet, along with a custom cancellation mark.
