Vancouver, BC (March 5, 2004) Subplot Design Inc. may be a new design firm, but the principals are certainly not new to the design world. Partners Matthew Clark and Roy White are internationally-recognized designers with over 15 years of experience each in producing highly effective and award-winning design solutions for a broad portfolio of clients. Subplot opens the doors to their downtown studio this week in Vancouver.
The partners were most recently the Associate Creative Director duo at karacters design group at Palmer Jarvis DDB, one of Western Canada’s leading design firms. The two were responsible for the top projects that the firm produced over the past five years, including their joint work on the launch of Urban Fare, the gourmet grocery store and restaurant in Vancouver’s trendy Yaletown. Their work included naming the store and designing the logo, identity, exterior and interior signage, environmental graphics, uniforms, take-out packaging and the comprehensive brand standards manual.
Born in London, England, Roy White’s career has spanned 18 years in the graphic design industry in England, Australia and Canada. After owning his own successful design firm in London, Roy moved to Australia in the early 90’s to work on Olympic-related branding projects, most notably the Olympic Village at Homebush Bay. Other projects have included design for Sheraton hotels, Virgin Records and the successful re-branding of the Australian Government Services Agency. Joining karacters in 1997, Roy became Creative Director on major projects for Shoppers Drug Mart, St. John Ambulance, Telus and the more recent Finning International annual report.
Matthew Clark is a third-generation Vancouverite who began his own design firm while completing a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of British Columbia. With karacters for the past 9 years, Matthew’s design and branding work soon became the foundation for the firm’s award-winning reputation, particularly with his innovative work for Clearly Canadian on their sparkling waters of the same name as well as Clearly Canadian Oxygenated Water, Tré Limone and Reebok Fitness Water, a partnership with Reebok International.
“It is a very exciting time for Vancouver and the design industry, and we know that our local expertise and international brand design knowledge can benefit our clients greatly.” says Roy White. “With the added international exposure that Vancouver will enjoy in 2010 for the Olympic Games, it’s the role of the local design community to ensure that as a city, we shine under the spotlight. We plan to be a large part of Vancouver’s success.”
Subplot seeks to do what its partners have been doing successfully for 15 years: to combine analytical and strategic thinking with truly breakthrough design creative. Whether it involves the naming and introduction of a new company, the invention of a new beverage or product, or the full deployment of a communications strategy and brand standards program, every project benefits from this dedication to the synthesis of sound strategy and breakthrough creative.
“The buzz words in recent years seem to have been strategy, strategy and strategy. Unfortunately, this focus can often be at the expense of the final creative product”, says Matthew Clark. “Our clients have told us that they expect outstanding creative solutions from their design partners. At the end of the day, this is what consumers ultimately connect with.”
Matthew adds, “We don’t have plans to become a one-stop communications shop as many others have done. We will focus on what we do best: delivering ground-breaking design creative that sets our clients apart in the marketplace.”
That philosophy seems to work. Along with strong business success, Roy and Matthew’s work has appeared in every major design publication including Communication Arts, ID, Print, How, Graphis, Applied Arts, Graphics World and Germany’s Lurzer’s Archive, and has won some of the most coveted prizes in the industry, including the best of show two years in a row in Canada’s Marketing Magazine Packaging Awards and gold awards in the New York Festivals, London Advertising Club and NY-based Mobius awards. Their work has also been recognized in the AR100, the industry’s top annual report designs, the National Post Design Effectiveness Awards, which includes marketing and business effectiveness, and the closer-to-home Advertising and Design Club of Canada, the Graphic Designers of Canada, and BC’s Lotus Awards.
